Identity politics destroys art

This shows up on Twitter early in the morning:

Identity politics destroys art. At the logical end of this kind of reasoning lies the idea that you cannot reasonably depict anything that is outside of your racial, ethnic, gender ... identity. This goes against the very nature of artistic practice.

Truths about the world - which in most cases can be found outside of "our" racial, ethnic, cultural, gender identity and milieu - can be known and depicted through artistic means. This has been the modernist understanding and approach to artistic practice. Artmaking is no doubt a complicated and often an ideologically charged process. That doesn't negate our ability to seek truthful depictions/engagements with it. That doesn't disqualify us to seek solutions - artistic truths - along artistic avenues.
